ITF UNIQLO Mauritius Wheelchair Tennis Open 2015

During last week Mauritius held First in the History ITF UNIQLO Wheelchair tennis tournament.

It was a big success. 22 players from Mauritius, South Africa, France and Ireland had hot matches under the Mauritian sun.

South African team dominates at this time. High ranked Mariska Venter and Leon Els were first seeded players and they proof it. Mariska in the singles final take advantage against Thando Hlatswayo (7:5,6:2). After that together with Thando they defeated Mauritian young promise Brandy Perrine and South African Nokwanda Hlongwane in two straight sets. Another Mauritian player Jennifer Rose reached semi-final. Absolutely good result for the first tournament in carrier for Mauritian girls.

In the men’s single draw Leon Els and Garreth Green from Ireland are still looking forward to be qualified for Paralympic Games — 2016 in Rio. This motivation brought them to the final, where more experienced Leon showed best performance and win the final match 6:0,6:1.

Noorani Alleare is Mauritius National Champion 2015 with Garreth Green couldn’t do anything with Leon Els and Patrick Selepe from South Africa in the men’s final doubles match.

Sport plays a key role in the integration of the disabled community in our society. I am happy to note that adequate facilities to promote the development and practice of handisport are provided in Mauritius.First Lady of the Mauritius Sarojini Devi Jugnauth, Patron of the tournament
Thanks to those people who believe in us and who have helped in one way or the other by making this prestigious event possible. Thank you for thinking that «in sport, all are equal». We hope to work more and to have Grade3 in 2016.Veronique Marisson, president of PHYSFED, Organizer of the tournament

The social event was held on the 3rd of December — «The International Day of Persons with Disabilities» — in Asso Villa, where players could see the exhibition of sport racing cars and bikes.

The team «We Are Racing» took all the players on their wheels and ride with them through the oceanfront roads!

Another great adventure were prepared for participants: after the tournament on the public beach everyone could try Sitting Beach Tennis. Perhaps it will help this really interesting sport to be recognized by the Paralympic Committee in the future!
